The Time Someone Called IT Because Their Keyboard Was Typing Backwards

It was just another Tuesday in the IT helpdesk when a ticket popped up with the subject line: “My keyboard is typing backwards, please fix!” Intrigued, I opened the request to find a detailed description from a rather panicked user.

According to the ticket, every time they pressed a key, the letter appeared on the screen but in reverse order. For example, typing “hello” would show up as “olleh.” They were certain their keyboard was possessed by some kind of witchcraft or perhaps the spirits of old typewriters avenging their obsolescence. The user was desperate and had already tried unplugging and re-plugging the keyboard, but to no avail.

I called the user to gather more information. After a brief chat, I asked them to show me exactly what was happening. The user opened a blank document and typed the word “cat.” To my amusement, on the screen appeared “tac” as they claimed. I asked them to try typing “dog,” and sure enough, the output was “god.” I tried to keep a straight face but was already picturing the most absurd coding bug ever.

Next, I asked if they had any special keyboard software or odd settings enabled. The user mentioned they had recently downloaded a new keyboard layout program to “make typing more fun,” which they thought might be unrelated. Bingo.

I guided them through checking their keyboard settings and found out the “Reverse Text” option had been mistakenly toggled on in this whimsical software. Disabling it restored the normal typing order immediately.

The user was relieved, thanked me profusely, and promised never to try unconventional keyboard layouts again. As I closed the ticket, I couldn’t help but smile, knowing this was one of my more memorable tech mysteries solved with nothing more than a quirky app setting.

Moral of the story: When your keyboard starts acting like it’s from the Upside Down, sometimes it’s just a prankish feature—not a hardware malfunction.
