When a User Called IT Because Their Computer Was Too Quiet

One busy Tuesday afternoon, the helpdesk received a ticket that immediately stood out: a user was reporting that their computer was “too quiet.” At first glance, the description seemed odd—after all, most people don’t expect their computers to make much noise beyond the occasional hum of the fan or the clicking of keys. But as the ticket read on, it became clear this was not a joke.

The user explained that their workstation usually made a pleasant ‘buzz’ or ‘hum’ that reassured them it was working properly. The silence, they claimed, was unsettling and made them worry that something was wrong with their machine. They described it in almost poetic terms: “The computer usually sings its little song when it wakes up. Today, it’s like a quiet library and that’s scary.”

Our technician, curious and amused, called the user to understand better. After a short conversation, it turned out the user had been using a 15-year-old desktop with a famously noisy power supply fan and an ancient mechanical hard drive. The ‘quiet’ was actually a sign the machine was powered off, but the user, having switched to a new silent ultrabook recently, was now used to the absence of fan noise. They missed the old ‘computer sounds’ as a way to feel confident the machine was working.

Trying not to laugh, the technician explained that modern computers are designed to run quietly or even silently, especially if they aren’t handling any demanding processes. The lack of a buzz wasn’t a sign of malfunction; it was just a sign the computer was efficient and well-cooled. The user seemed relieved but slightly confused about how technology had moved on.

For a little morale boost, the technician sent the user a link to a YouTube video titled “Old computer sounds to relax your soul” so they could listen to the familiar noises anytime they wanted without having to power on a noisy dinosaur of a PC.

This ticket was a perfect reminder that sometimes the quirks we grow used to can become our comforting background noise — even if it’s just some old computer fan humming away. And every quiet computer is, in its own way, a tiny miracle of modern engineering.
