When the Printer Demanded a Driver Update to Make Coffee: A Bizarre IT Support Ticket

It was an otherwise uneventful morning at the IT helpdesk when a ticket popped up with a subject line that immediately caught my eye: “Printer demands driver update to make coffee.” Naturally, I leaned back in my chair, doubting whether my caffeine-deprived brain was playing tricks on me. But no, the ticket was real.

The user explained that their office printer, a fairly standard model, suddenly started displaying an error message claiming it needed a driver update before it could “brew coffee.” Confused but entertained, I responded asking for a screenshot. Moments later, the image arrived, showing an utterly normal Windows driver update prompt, but someone had evidently added the words “to make coffee” into the printable error message — either as a prank or a bizarre bug.

Digging into the user’s description, it turned out that an overenthusiastic coworker had installed a custom “printer utility app” they found online, promising to “enhance your printer experience,” which, shockingly, included a virtual coffee maker interface. The app, it seemed, was designed to make users feel like they were interacting with a multitasking coffee machine but in reality did nothing but confuse the driver software.

After politely explaining that the printer wasn’t about to start dispensing lattes and that updating the driver was perfectly normal for printing, I recommended uninstalling the rogue utility app entirely. The user admitted this odd program came bundled with a suspicious free coffee discount coupon in a spam email — classic bait and switch.

Upon removing the utility, the printer returned to its usual role of printing spreadsheets without the added espresso demands. We all had a good laugh about the absurdity of a printer that could supposedly need a software update to function as a barista. Sometimes IT support means fixing real problems, and sometimes it means untangling the weird imaginations of office jokers.

Lesson learned: never trust any software promising your printer will make coffee. It might just give you an error message instead.
