The Time Someone Called IT to Fix “Invisible Wi-Fi” That Was Just Airplane Mode

One day, the IT helpdesk received a ticket with the subject line: “Wi-Fi not showing—urgent!” The user claimed that their Wi-Fi signal had mysteriously vanished overnight. According to the ticket, the invisible Wi-Fi was causing a complete halt in productivity, and they needed immediate assistance to find and fix it.

When the IT technician called the user for a quick diagnosis, the conversation went something like this:

Tech: “Hi there! I see you’re having Wi-Fi issues. Can you tell me more about what you’re experiencing?”

User: “Yes, the Wi-Fi just disappeared. It’s like it’s invisible. I can’t see any networks to connect to, and my emails aren’t syncing.”

Tech: “Alright, can you check if your Wi-Fi is turned on in the settings?”

User: “I did that. It’s on, but no networks show up.”

Tech: “Can you see if Airplane Mode is enabled by any chance?”

User (pausing): “Airplane Mode? No, that doesn’t sound right.”

Tech: “If you swipe down on your screen or look in your control center, there should be a little airplane icon. Could you tell me if it’s highlighted?”

User (after a brief pause): “Oh… yes? It is highlighted, actually.”

Tech: “That’s Airplane Mode. It disables all wireless connections, including Wi-Fi. Turning it off should bring back your networks.”

User: “Wait, so the Wi-Fi wasn’t invisible? It was just hiding because the phone was pretending it was on a plane?”

Tech: “Exactly. Not invisible, just temporarily blocked by Airplane Mode.”

User: “Wow, thanks! I thought it was some new Wi-Fi ghost feature.”

After the tech helped the user turn off Airplane Mode, the Wi-Fi returned immediately. The ticket was closed with a note: “Invisible Wi-Fi solved by disabling Airplane Mode. No ghosts involved.”

The helpdesk team later joked about adding a “Ghostbusters” mode to their troubleshooting checklist. Sometimes the strangest technical issues come down to the simplest human errors—like accidentally turning on the one setting designed to make all connectivity disappear!
