The Time Someone Called IT Because Their Computer Was “Too Loud”

One quiet Tuesday afternoon, the IT helpdesk received a call that left the entire team baffled and eventually giggling for hours. The ticket came from a user named Janet in accounting, who reported an urgent issue: her computer was “too loud.”

Janet explained that she was trying to concentrate on some important budget spreadsheets, but her desktop kept making a roaring noise, loud enough to distract her and everyone around. Naturally, the thought of a malfunctioning fan or a hardware failure crossed the IT team’s minds, and they quickly dispatched one of the techs to investigate.

When the technician arrived at Janet’s desk, he found everything silent. No fan spinning wildly, no unusual beeping, and no strange noises coming from the machine itself. Perplexed, he asked Janet to demonstrate the noise. Janet pointed to her headphones, where music was playing, but what was unusual was that the volume was cranked to max and autoplayed some heavy metal tracks.

Turns out, Janet had accidentally bumped her volume controls while reaching for her cup of coffee and didn’t realize she was listening to what she described as “someone shouting at me nonstop.” She thought it was the computer making noises by itself and assumed it was a serious hardware problem. After a brief tutorial on volume controls and headphone settings, Janet was happy, the noise stopped, and the entire office enjoyed a few minutes of shared laughter.

The ticket was closed with the comment: “User was afraid her computer was trying to wake the whole building. Turns out the real culprit was a very enthusiastic playlist.” Just another day on the helpdesk!
