The Time a User Reported Their Keyboard Was Typing Backwards and It Turned Out to Be a Simple Language Setting Mix-Up

One bright Monday morning, the helpdesk team received a ticket that immediately caught everyone’s attention. The user reported that their keyboard was “typing backwards” and that they couldn’t get any work done because every word appeared reversed on the screen. Naturally, this was puzzling and sparked a range of wild guesses from ghostly interference to some bizarre new software bug.

When the technician arrived at the user’s desk, they were met with a visibly frustrated employee trying to type the word “help” only to see “pleh” appear on the screen. The tech took a closer look and asked the user to type the alphabet, which came out as “zyxwvutsrqponmlkjihgfedcba.” This was certainly not something found in the usual IT manuals.

After ruling out hardware issues by connecting a spare keyboard and checking for any strange software installations, the technician remembered an often overlooked setting: the keyboard language and layout options. In the language bar at the bottom right corner of the screen was a foreign language selected, one that rearranged the keyboard layout to a different script.

Switching the language setting back to the user’s native language immediately fixed the problem. The letters on the keyboard and screen synced up perfectly now, and words typed appeared exactly as expected. The user was both embarrassed and relieved, admitting they had accidentally hit a keyboard shortcut that changed the language settings the day before but didn’t realize it until everything looked “backwards.”

The technician left the desk with a smile, adding a note in the ticket about checking keyboard languages before diving into more complicated solutions. This incident quickly became a favorite retold story around the helpdesk, a prime example of how sometimes the simplest answers are right under your fingertips—literally.
